Transforming Fountains, Extreme Grades, and Rocky Areas into Performance Spaces
Providing staging for indoor events is pretty easy. Carpeting and elevators can be a bit of a hassle, but most of the time, level floors, air conditioning, and easy access to facilities make an indoor staging routine. On the other hand, outdoor stages can be… challenging!
Outdoor rental stages present lots of obstacles at the best of times. Knowing that you are going to be building a stage in a difficult environment requires more than just equipment. You need experience, strategy, engineering, and a whole lot of pre-planning.
Site Surveys for Outdoor Stages in Difficult Terrain
Our staff will typically schedule a site survey for any client needing an outdoor stage. However, if we know the location is going to be challenging, it’s an absolute must that we review the site – before the trucks show up! A site survey allows our staff to measure grade, depth, ground conditions and other factors that affect pricing, safety, and ease of building.
The three most challenging types of outdoor stage builds are:
Fountains
Building staging is fountains, whether for a mall, private event, municipal event, or at a theme park, is always tricky. Fountains are not level, and many times will have pipes or other elements sticking up that have to be avoided.
Uneven Terrain
Performance areas with extreme grades can also be challenging. Surface type also is a factor here – is the uneven ground an asphalt parking lot, or a grassy hill? Is there a rock wall that needs to be built over? Will drainage need to be considered? Several questions need to be answered to provide a stage in these environments.
Rocky Areas
Areas with decorative rock or gravel can be very difficult to build on. The size of the rocks, grade, and overall shape of the rocks can make leg placement challenging and make it difficult for our technicians and staff to work on. Boulders, the location of trees, and other natural features also need to be considered.
